Business Stuff First
Well goodness! The blog went over 1200 views in a single day last week and we had over 25,000 image views in ONE day!!! Thank you, it must mean I’m doing this right…or at the very least better than the others. I’ve seen where a few photogs have upgraded their equipment/websites and I’d like to think I helped pushed them towards a better product for you the consumer. I can think that, it’s my fantasy and blog!
OK-for a bit of a WTF.
I get to see a lot of “photogs” at events, from the pros to the wannabees (I put myself near the middle of that pack). A few observations from the man behind the curtain (shutter that is): I see press photogs that are on their cell phone more than they’re paying attention to the game, I see wannabees that are just using their camera to get a good view of the event (while blocking the view of everyone else) and I see both spending way to much time talking to anyone and everyone. Now I understand that chitchat is apart of business, but when I see the same photog still standing next to the same person(s) after 15-30 min, then you’re not there to “work”, but get your ego boost or if you’re getting paid-you’re cheating your employer.
The Man
Now for a BIG KUDO. One photographer that doesn’t fall into the paragraph above is Steve Davis of the Register Mail. He’s always there (events) to get a great image(s) and it always shows in his work. He’s always looking for different angles, knows the event for the best background (or is looking), pays attention in order to “predict” an action shot, understands depth of field/exposure values (you know-not standing at the outfield fence with a 300mm and then cropping a shot) and talks just enough to not be stuck-up (LIKE SO MANY OTHERS) but still be friendly. Steve’s work is one of the few reasons I look at the Register Mail. I’m always hoping his images are the ones used in ANY sporting event to go along with some fairly good sports reporting on occasion. I even once in awhile, will look, hoping, to see if Steve is the photographer used in any of the other news stories of the day.
WOW, after reading this, I feel like a fanatic…well I am a fan! There I admit it. No, he’s not a Walter Ioos Jr or a Max Rossi but I enjoy seeing his work and that’s what photography is all about. Keep up the great work Steve and here’s to hoping the RM sees your immense talents!
PS Hope this doesn’t get you in “trouble” with the gang at the RM….if so, apologies!
